Marlborough, Massachusetts and Sarasota, Florida
Raymond D. Bowman, 87, of Marlborough, Mass. and Sarasota, Fla., died at Doctor's Hospital in Sarasota on May 18, 2005.
He was born March 3, 1918 in Falmouth, Mass., where he resided until the 1950's. A forty-year resident of Wayland, Mass., he retired from Raytheon Corp. in 1982, where he had been employed as a security guard for thirty years. He had been a winter resident of Florida for the last seven years.
Mr. Bowman was a combat veteran of World War II, and he was an ex-prisoner of war. He was captured by German forces in Northern France while with the 104th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army 26th Infantry Division, also known as the "Yankee Division." He was a Protestant and a Life Member in DAV, VFW and The American Legion, where he held many offices, including Commander. He was very proud of these distinguished veteran's organizations, and participated in a great many youth and community programs, providing his guidance on the concepts of freedom, democracy and patriotism.
Active in the community, he was also a Sergeant in the Wayland Auxiliary Police and a member of the Central Mass. Police Association, until his retirement. He enjoyed bowling in the VFW Bowling League, and had been President of the Raytheon Bowling League. An amateur radio enthusiast, he was a member of the Framingham Communications Net. He loved baseball and was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan.
He was pre-deceased by his two brothers, Austin and Clifton, both of Cape Cod, Mass. He leaves his wife of 58 years, Gladys J. (Grew); a daughter, Catherine L. Kelley of Brockton, Mass.; sons Thomas R. of Wolfeboro, N.H., and William A. of West Boylston, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
His remains have been cremated. A military burial service will be Monday, June 27, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, Massachusetts.
